How to Add Pronouns to Instagram Account

Adding your preferred pronouns to your Instagram is a great way to let others know how to address you, making interactions easier (and sometimes less awkward).

Instagram was one of the first social media platforms to allow users to add their pronouns without having to add them to the end of their username. The feature was added in May 2021.

This guide will show you step-by-step how to add pronouns to your Instagram profile page so that other Instagram users can address you properly.

Adding pronouns to your profile information in the Instagram app is incredibly easy.

First, make sure you are using the mobile app (Android or iOS), as support for the feature is not currently available on desktop.

You should also update Instagram to the latest version to ensure all current options are available.

Add pronouns to your Instagram profile:

1. Step 1

   

   Tap on your profile picture in the bottom right corner.

2. Step 2

   

   Tap ‘Edit profile‘ near the top.

3. Step 3

   

   Tap Pronouns just below your display name.

4. Step 4

   

   Start typing your preferred pronouns on the line provided. Select the one you want from the drop-down list. Note: you will only be able to add up to four pronouns from the list provided.

5. Step 5

   

   To show your pronouns to followers, tap the right slider. To show your pronouns publicly, simply leave the slider alone. Note: Instagram users under the age of 18 will have this option selected by default.

6. Step 6

   When you are finished, tap done (iPhone) or the checkmark (Android) in the top right corner.

7. Step 7

   Tap done (iPhone) or the checkmark (Android) again to save your pronoun settings.

If you followed these steps, you’ve successfully added your pronouns to your profile for everyone (or just your followers) to see.

If you change your mind about posting your Instagram pronouns, you can always remove them at a later date. Here’s how:

1. STEP 1

   Tap on your profile picture in the bottom right corner.

2. STEP 2

   Tap Edit profile near the top.

3. STEP 3

   Tap Pronouns just below your user name.

4. STEP 4

   Tap the tiny ‘x‘ next to any pronouns you want to remove.

   

5. STEP 5

   When you are finished, tap done (iPhone) or the checkmark (Android) in the top right corner.

6. STEP 6

   Tap done (iPhone) or the checkmark (Android) again to save your pronoun settings.

At this time, Instagram has a set list of pronouns available. There currently is no option to write in your own.

Also, as stated above, you can only choose up to four pronouns for display on your Instagram profile.

Below is a list of all available pronoun options Instagram allows in commonly used groupings. This does not mean you have to choose your pronouns this way; any four that you feel suit you can be selected.

If you do not see your preferred pronoun on this list, consider sending Instagram a message letting them know, and your pronouns may be added to this feature in the future.
